Maybe you haven’t heard of Pebble’s Smart Watch, let me give you the rundown. The Pebble is an E-ink smart watch that was initially funded on Kickstarter back in April of 2012. It features a highly customizable interface, simple yet effective controls and quick notification for the device it’s paired with. This idea of bringing the watch into the 21st century was met with praise from people who think it’s not as ridiculous as wearing a computer on your face. So it comes as no surprise when it became one of Kickstarters most famous and well funded projects, quickly meeting and destroying its target goal. With their goal being met the question became how quickly will this smartwatch become the next must have item? I know for me personally I thought it was
the cat’s meow the shit and couldn’t wait ’til it officially launched.
Then something funny happened.
Rumors started pouring out about Apple working on their own smart watch. And soon Samsung had reportedly begun work on their own version, which is set to be revealed later this week. Just that news alone had been enough for me to hold off on any plans to buy some new company’s idea of a smart watch and wait to see if Apple or Samsung has the answer my wrist is looking for. Just a rumor was enough to lose me a customer as I’d rather flock to my tech giants for a revolution than bet on the new guy, and I wonder how many have done the same?
For this reason I feel like the Pebble Smart Watch, no matter how cool and innovative it may be, is doomed to a short life. A grave injustice when you take into consideration the risk that these few people took to invest in their idea only to have the reward stripped away from the bigger kids in the sandbox.
Any thoughts on the smartwatch craze? Are you more excited in Apple or Samsung’s smartwatch rumor? Or maybe you’ll stick by Pebble’s introduction into the wearable tech world?
